A small collection of vintage upright pianos.
We visited a group of upright pianos and captured their homey sound. From those visits, we built the Upright Pianos: Logic sample pack.
There’s a lot of character, a lot of depth, a bit of intonation, but heaps of playability in this unique sample library. Captured using a vintage Cole Ribbon microphone and clip-on Sony mics, this unique approach to recording these pianos captures the years of history residing within the black-and-whites.
We then created tunings for each keyboard mapping and calibrated them against a chromatic strobe tuner. Electronic musicians might think that one should tune a piano by using a chromatic tuner to tune each note. Unfortunately, this leads to a phenomenon called “inharmonicity,” which makes an acoustic piano sound a bit strange.
Ideally, low notes on an acoustic piano are tuned slightly flat, and high notes are tuned slightly sharp. The tunings SoundEngine creates in this manner are really for layering with other electronic sounds when desired precision and the elimination of any “frequency beating” are required.
