SoundEngine’s Upright Pianos sample pack is not your average piano sample pack. These pianos aren’t perfect. These pianos were not captured in a recording studio with $2000 mics. There aren’t many things, but they are different. They do have character. They would easily drop into a film score or into the background music of someone playing the piano in their living room. This library captures that. That feeling when you see your grandmother’s upright and know that it hasn’t been played in a decade, is a little dusty, and more than a little out of tune. You came here for that sound, and this sample pack delivers it.
We’ve created presets that complement these samples in unique ways. A creepy, stretched pluck – a reversed hammer key, wave sample shifting, pads, and more. Additionally, thoughtful sound design – especially the microphone selection and recording methods- was created with the odd, homemade-sounding end product in mind. Here are the notes on the recording methods:
Demo:
Hanson Pianoforte:Â This is an English upright from 1908. The recordings were made with an MS pair comprising a Coles 4038 for the sides and an Audio-Technica MB3000L for the middle. The preamp was an LA Audio MLX20, and the AD was an Echo Layla, the original 20-bit version. Some EQ and NR were done in Cubase VST/32 using Waves plugins.
Hanson Mono:Â A mono sampling using a Sony 717 stereo microphone and a Boss mixer. This is warm, with a nice presence.
Hanson Stereo: A stereo sampling using a Sony 717 stereo microphone and a Soundcraft Spirit desk. It’s warm.
Ladbrooke:Â Â This is a funky out-of-tune parallel-strung piano from the 1950s, recorded with the Sony microphone and a Philips DCC portable recorder. This sound has been used on the Nintendo game “Rubadubdub”!
Charlie’s piano:Â This piano is seriously out of tune, and you will also hear the atmospheric sounds of domestic activity on some notes, which can be either spooky or cozy depending on how much reverb is used. Originally recorded in 8-bit/ 22kHz with a Canon PowerShot camera.
These weren’t recorded in a studio – that would have missed the point. We chose lo-fi gear in some cases to get the sound right. Listen to the demos – if you want a unique, expressive piano tone in your composition, this bargain-priced collection is well worth the small investment.
