At SoundEngine, I’m always hoping to provide you with new ways of enjoying your gear, especially Dexed, the fantastic, free DX7 emulation software. Dexed happens to be my “go to” FM synthesizer to try out new stuff. I use it as a starting ground for authoring new patches for our other FM synths like the OpSix or the FS1r. I also use it as our first place to audition new Dexed sounds I find on the web, because of its quick accessibility.
The FIND
I recently found The Introvert’s website. He’s experimenting in a lot of arts-related activities, including Music, Photograpy, and DX7 sound generation with AI. He also is a really nice guy. I had reached out to him to let him know about this post before I wrote it, and we chatted a bit about one of my favorite topics – Fizmo!
19 new Carts
What I wanted to share with you was his AI experiments in generating DX7 sounds. He has essentially trained an AI to generate tons of DX7 patches – giving it a few prompts and guidelines. He’s been kind enough to share them with the community, too! On this page, you can read about what he’s done, and download 19 new DX7 banks – or Dexed carts for this purpose – to try out right away.
Check them out
Checking out these sounds is easy – click the download links on the site, and unzip the results. Place the result of the unzip operation in the “Carts” folder on your hard drive with all of your other Dexed sounds. A quick way to access this folder is to press the CART button on Dexed, then click the SHOW DIR button – this action opens a folder where all of the Dexed carts are stored. Then, you can just drag the new folders of sounds into that directory. You can use these steps with any new Dexed sounds.
Loading these news sound is exactly like the process described in our previous post on Dexed Cart Loading Secrets. I found the sounds really interesting and useful, in fact I plan to use them shortly. I’ll also keep a lookout on the Introvert’s site to see any future experiments.
Wrap Up
These sounds are just a small sampling of what’s available as new tone resources for Dexed. Dexed has a huge, free library of it’s own that we’ll be taking a walk through in our next post. I’m always working to generate ideas and sounds that simplify the process of making electronic music, and these sounds from the Introvery definitely do that.
